In this first developer blog we sit down with Andreas Risberg, Nonstop Games Product Lead for Heroes of Honor. Andreas is overseeing the game’s development and excitement is certainly building as production moves into the final stages.

First of all Andreas, tell us a bit more about the type of game you guys are working on, Heroes of Honor sounds great but what sort of game is it?

AR: “Heroes of Honor is a fantasy themed strategy game. We are tailor making the game for a great experience on touch devices such as your iPad. The game takes place in the world of Valoria where players will be able to cooperate, form alliances and battle each other on a real time world map. There is an immersive city building aspect but what really sets it apart is the real time map, no other game on mobile has done this before.”

The world of Valoria you say, can you elaborate on that?

AR: “Sure, In Valoria, the world was split into three Factions who fought over Valorium, the most precious resource of this world. The war escalated into the Great Cataclysm which shattered the world. This led to Demons pouring out from the depths and taking control of the resources in the world. With the Gods banished and the Factions scattered, players are tasked with rebuilding their realms, forging alliances and destroying their enemies in the process.”

Tell us more about these Factions and Demons, sounds like even though the Factions don’t like each other they share a common hatred of the Demons?

AR: “Yes, it’s a multiparty struggle against Demons but also against hostile Factions, let me introduce you to them.

First of all there are the Imperials made up of Dwarves, High-Elves, and the Imperial Humans. They’re united by the worship of the four prime Gods; Selene, Aurora, Gaius and Makus.

Then there are the Clans, made up of giant Barbarians, Orcs and Goblins. The Clans very much respect and worship Valoria and their Clan ancestors.

The final group is the Shadows, made up of Human Occultists, Undead and Dark Elves. This Faction believes that the scarce mineral called Valorium holds the key to world domination.

The Demons are united in their hatred of the three Factions. They were trapped for thousands of years in the void created by the Gods but are now breaking through the barriers erected to keep the Factions safe. They are also the only holders of Valorium, which is the most precious but finite resource in Valoria.”

It sounds like Valorium is a key resource, what role does it play in the world of Valoria?

AR: “Valorium is the resource that powers both dark and light magic. It can also be used to increase status effects of armor and weapons. The problem for the Factions is that the Demons have a tight grip on all Valorium and there’s only a limited amount left. Heroes of the different Factions will have to take up the Demons and each other in battle to get their hands on it.”

Sounds like an explosive cocktail?

AR: “Yup, players better get ready to build their armies and fight. Of course the secret to success is to team up with players and actively work together. Coordinating attacks and combining forces in the chat is one of the ways that we’ve made the experience more immersive and a lot more fun.”

So players should be working together to get the best out of Heroes of Honor?

AR: “Definitely. The real time map and online play adds a whole new dimension to Valoria allowing for coordinated attacks and teamwork. As players advance they’ll get access to new Heroes and special events. Of course we’ll also be releasing new Heroes and totally new units on a regular basis.”

A lot to look forward to indeed. As a final thought can you tell us a bit more about your role as a product manager, how are you involved in the development of the game and what are the best parts about your job?

AR: “My work is not just about managing the product and making sure we deliver. Most of what I do is actually designing the game, and coordinating and collaborating with the programmers to solve issues that might pop up. This is a really fun and dynamic process, where the whole team can contribute to how the game looks and feels. That’s why this will be such a great game, it’s made by a bunch of avid gamers who are making a game they themselves want to play! Much of my time actually goes to just playing games!”

Next time we sit down with Kenneth Lim, Art Director at Nonstop Games. Kenneth is going to give us a sneak peek into the characters and flesh out why the Demons play such a huge role in Heroes of Honor.

Everyone at Nonstop Games is very excited about our upcoming title: “Heroes of Honor”. With this game we attempt to redefine what strategy on touch devices looks like; a true game for gamers, tailor made for touch.

But having a great game is just part of the story, it does not mean people will actually find and start playing your game. Just like on web a great marketing strategy is crucial. And this is where the fun starts:

- Whereas there are a few big players on web (Google, Facebook) mobile is highly fragmented: hundreds of networks are at your disposal, how do we chose the right ones?

- Love your GA funnel analysis? Well think again on mobile, tracking is patching things together and analytics is proper number crunching.

- ASO is the new SEO

- IOS, Android? The differences are much bigger than Mac vs PC.

- Can you believe that CPM is still common on mobile???? Oh and the A in CPA has been replaced by an I, crazy stuff!

As a Games Marketing Executive you will work at this frontier of Mobile App Marketing, possibly the fastest growing and most exciting marketing channel in the world. So, if new technology, advertising and games are your cup of tea than this is a great opportunity for you to learn the robes before anyone else does.

While we expect some experience in the field we are mainly looking for your pro-activeness and passion. Apply and convince us you have what it takes, we promise we’ll never make you wear a suit again.

NONSTOP GAMES RAISES $2.9M USD SEED FUNDING FOR ITS IMMERSIVE, REAL-TIME, FREE-TO-PLAY GAMES

SINGAPORE, HELSINKI, SAN FRANCISCO, CA – March 19th, 2013. Nonstop Games, a Finland and Singapore based games company, has raised a $2.9M USD (€2.2M EUR, $3.5M SGD) seed round led by Creandum and Lifeline Ventures — venture funds most known for their investments in online music company Spotify and games company Supercell.

With this investment Nonstop Games will expand to San Francisco and continue on their mission to redefine free-to-play games across touch devices. Nonstop Games will also use the funds to launch the first of its core gaming titles — Heroes of Honor — a synchronous strategy game that pushes the boundaries of what gamers can expect from tablet and mobile gaming.

“We are extremely excited to be supported by world class investors in our mission to build the next generation of free-to-play games for touch devices,” says Juha Paananen, CEO and Co-Founder of Nonstop Games. “Our aim is to make games people can live, not just play. We want to create immersive experiences that are tailor-made for tablet and mobile. Heroes of Honor will be the first title to show this,” adds Henric Suuronen, President and Co-Founder.

“Mobile gaming is exploding and gamers are expecting an increasingly superior game experience. Nonstop Games has the team and vision to meet these requirements.” says Daniel Blomquist, Creandum. “We’ve been extremely excited about Nonstop Games since our initial investment in 2011 and we think they are building something revolutionary with their new game,” says Petteri Koponen, Lifeline Ventures.

Heroes of Honor, Nonstop Games’ next game, will launch later this Spring. The game is based in a captivating fantasy world with three different factions fighting for power. Players build towns and armies, form alliances, and perform coordinated attacks with their alliance members. It features massive real-time battles between thousands of player armies concurrently — something never seen before on mobile games.

Juha Paananen, Henric Suuronen, lead programmer Henrik Karlström and CTO Teemu Ikonen founded Nonstop Games in 2011. Paananen previously ran business development for Nokia in the APAC region based in Singapore. Suuronen was Head of Studio at Wooga and Director at Digital Chocolate before that, and he has managed over 50 titles on mobile and desktop platforms including several Top 10 hits on iOS and Facebook.

Nonstop Games is very proud to announce its newest game: Heroes of Honor. It will launch in the App Store and on Google Play within the next few months. The game is our most ambitious project to date and aims to re-invent strategy games on both tablet and mobile touch devices.

Heroes of Honor is a next generation strategy game with a choice of three factions: Imperials, Clans and Shadows. Each faction has unique strengths and tactics to join the call to arms in the destroyed world of Valoria where they all battle over scarce resources, territory and honor. The game features two distinct gameplay models: a city management mode and a new revolutionary real time battle map shared with players around the world – a true first of its kind on tablets and smartphones. Players will harvest resources, train troops and evolve heroes to lead them into fierce PvP and PvE combat. The game includes a multitude of strategies and will challenge players for months if not years. Emphasis will also be on offering players the next generation of social experience with advanced alliances, realtime chat, and rankings.

“We love RTS and strategy games at Nonstop Games. The range of real strategy games on the market for touch devices is currently quite disappointing. With Heroes of Honor, we want to create the absolute best strategy game experience, tailor-made for touch devices” says Product Lead Andreas Risberg at Nonstop Games.

We’ll keep you updated on the progress of the game. It will be epic!

Some months ago we decided to shift the product strategy of Nonstop games from casual games to core games. We wanted to make games we ourselves, as gamers, would like to play. I think this notion is very important. The games business is extremely competitive and to succeed in games you just must be passionate about the game you are working on. Our first core game will be “Game IV” and we are very excited about it. Since there has been some discussion on whether html5 is suitable for mass-market games we though it would be useful to share our point of view. Our approach when developing html5 games has always been working on the benefits of the techncology (some mentioned here) and avoiding game types where html5 has disadvantages (e.g. animation heavy games). Next we list 5 aspects that support making core games in html5.

Complex Layered Strategy/Optimization
When you think about it some of the most complex/best core games actually have quite little animation. I don’t think many players loves Civilization, Travian, Chess and Poker for their animation. What makes these games “click” if the deep game mechanics that can take months to master – not their animation. In fact in many optimization games time consuming animations are annoying, the animation is nice a couple of times but when you organize your attack in civilization the last thing you want is 5-7 second long animations after each action. Many successful F2P browser games like OGame, Kingdoms of Camelot, Evony, and the before mentioned Travian are all high strategy – low animation games.

User Generated Content
With Paint Stars and also with Dollar Isle we could clearly see the value of sharing the “Game as a Link” and also users’ desire to share their creations. The ability to copy&paste a link in skype, chat, facebook status or twitter has been hugely used in our first two games. One of the biggest benefits HTML5 offers is the ability to share a quick “handle” – a link to your game. The receiving party – be that a friend or a complete stranger can then access the game without installation. Within minutes you have gotten a new allie to your army or whatever you are building.

Asynchronous games
Most F2P games that have had success in the past years have been asynchronous. This trend supports HTML5, since asynchronous games tend to require less animation than synchronous games. Since actions are not happening in real-time in fonrt of the player he also does not expect a heavy animation being shown. Also, since asynchronous games don’t require users to interact in exactly the same time they tend to lend themselves better to cross-device gameplay, which is discussed in the point of cross-platform play. But it is quite natural that synchronous games are more affected by for example latency issues if the counterpart is playing on a higher latency network for example using a phone. Imagine playing a synchronous racing game over a 3G network compared to a asynchronous war game. It does not matter if the army attack is performed 1s later than intended whereas 1s in a rally game can be difference between gold and not qualifying.

Game IV – prototyping

‘More’ Social Interaction: PvP, Alliances, Chat etc.
This term is somewhat silly but I think it is fair to say that all PvP, trading or collaboration intensive games are a lot more social than games where the social interaction is mainly gifting or asking for nails from your neighbor. Real people interact, chat and agree in alliances on what to do to achieve the next objective in the game. This interaction creates enormous social value that goes far beyond accepting nails as a gift in some Facebook games. When a game gets its value from social it becomes even more important to be able to distribute the games on any device, something that HTML5 really enables.

Real benefit from cross-platform
The more social interaction, the more value users tend to get from the ability to play the same game across devices. But here I am not talking about gifting apples in Facebook Cityville. In that case there is really no user benefit of being able to launch the same game and accepting the apple using a smartphone/tablet or similar. For the cross-platform aspect to be a real user value the social interaction should be time-sensitive. For example, imagine your friend attacking your city in a war game. Then it is very valuable for the user to access the same game he played on desktop with his iPhone or tablet and prepare the defenses before the attack occurs. Games like these also benefit from the fact that anyone with a browser can play the game. More devices being able to play the game -> more players -> more interaction -> more value.

This list not intended to be an absolute truth, I am sure you can make a lot of other game types successfully in html5 that do not follow our recommendations. However, the elements listed are what we believe can make an html5 game become every bit as successful or even more so than a native application. With the launch of Game IV later, we will see if our approach and believes hold true.
